Job Description:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Second Chance Animal Rescue’s staff, programs, expansion, and the execution of its mission. The ED will initially develop deep knowledge of the field, core programs, operations, and business plans. The primary role of the ED will be to fundraise for the organization—including leading an expected capital campaign in the coming years—with additional leadership and planning responsibilities. The ED will work directly with the Shelter Director— the direct supervisor of all other organizational staff—to ensure proper care and management of both the animals and the facility.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership & Management (40%)

  • Ensure ongoing local programmatic excellence, rigorous evaluation, and consistent quality in finance, administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.

  • Develop annual plans with timelines and resources to achieve strategic goals.

  • Collaborate with the board of directors and staff to implement strategic plans.

  • Recommend organizational policies and procedures to professionalize the organization.

  • Actively engage and energize volunteers, fosters, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organizations, and funders.

  • Lead, coach, develop, and retain a high-performance senior management team.

  • Collaborate with relevant committees and Board members to develop, monitor, and communicate annual and strategic plans.

  • Maintain regular communication with officers of the board to ensure they are updated on organizational and programmatic activities.

  • Represent the organization at social and corporate events to strengthen the brand and communicate the company’s message.

  • Communicate with the Board for scheduling, planning, coordinating, and preparing reports for monthly board and committee meetings.

  • Monitor company operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.

  • Work with the treasurer of the Board to review and monitor financial reports, monthly financial statements, and the annual budget.

  • Attend continuing education courses on grant writing, computer programs, nonprofit management, and relevant topics benefiting the organization.

  • Manage the website, publications, CRM, Email Communications, GiveSmart OKC profile, and other programs effectively.

Fundraising & Communications (50%)

  • Develop the organization’s fundraising capacity and infrastructure.

  • Lead all fundraising activities with the assistance of the board of directors and senior staff.

  • Maintain office and software systems to support all development projects and program operations, including the organization’s fundraising database.

  • Establish multifaceted relationships across public, private, and non-profit sectors to diversify revenue sources from individual donors, foundations, corporate partners, & government agencies.

  • Expand local revenue-generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and organizational growth.

  • Submit grant requests and necessary grant reports. Grants should be written based on needs within the organization. The director must work with the board of directors and other staff to identify those needs.

  • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications to create a stronger brand.

  • Lead an upcoming capital campaign expected to last 3-5 years to increase the organization’s endowment and build a new facility.

Planning & New Business (10%)

  • Execute the organization’s strategic plan.

  • Begin to build partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with political and community leaders in the local and broader communities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, or another field.

  • 3 - 5 years of professional nonprofit experience, 2 of which are in fundraising & development.

  • Commitment to inclusivity in the workplace & creating a safe working environment.

  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs & data-driven program evaluation & improvement.

  • Excellence in organizational management, team development, strategy, and budget management.

  • Past success working with a Board of Directors & cultivating board member relationships.

  • Strong marketing & fundraising experience with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in business administration, public administration, or another field.

  • Experience working with animal welfare organizations.

  • Management experience.

  • Experience authoring grant applications to foundations, corporations & government funders.

  • Knowledge of and experience with capital campaigns.

  • Knowledge of and experience with strategic planning.
